Go For The “God” Spot

“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”
~ Dr. Seuss
“The mind is like an elastic band.  The more you pull, the more it stretches.  Every time you feel limitations, close your eyes and say to yourself, “I am the Infinite,” and you will see what power you have.”
~ Paramahansa Yogananda
“The greatest discovery of any generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering the attitudes of their minds.”
~ Albert Schweitzer

Don’t complain
about your pain,

or of what you have,
or have not.

Just get into your brain,
and find the spot

where all you want –
you’ve got.

Cartesian Critique

“I think with intuition. The basis of true thinking is intuition.

Indeed, it is not intellect, but intuition which advances humanity.”

~ Albert Einstein
“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift

and the rational mind is a faithful servant.

We have created a society

that honors the servant

and has forgotten the gift.”

~ Albert Einstein
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

~ Albert Einstein
“The heart has its reasons which reason cannot know.”
“We know truth not by reason only, but by the heart”
“It is the heart which feels God, not the reason.
This then is faith: God felt by the heart, not by the reason”
~ Blaise Pascal
“Faith is different from proof;
the latter is human, the former is a gift from God.”
~ Blaise Pascal
To think or not to think,

that is the question!

~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
Thinking and Being can’t coexist.

So stop thinking and start Being.

~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
Forget who you think you are

to Know what you really are.

~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Cartesian Critique

Descartes deduced his presumed separate existence with thought.
He reasoned: “I think, therefore I am”.

But wasn’t that putting Descartes before his Source?

Isn’t it apparent that we exist when not thinking?

Isn’t thinking optional, while Being is perpetual?

Why are we called human “beings”, and not human “thinkings”?

Isn’t existence much more than just thinking?

Don’t we exist in thoughtless states?

Doesn’t Being encompass conscious and subconscious
phenomena beyond thought – like emotions, feelings, sounds,
tastes, sensations, moods, dreams, autonomic processes, etc.?

Don’t all thoughts comprise and concern past ideas,
whereas life is ever lived in the Now,
never in the past or the future?

Aren’t we most aware of our existence
when we are thoughtlessly/choicelessly mindful?

What might Descartes say,
if he were here today?

Close Out Your ‘Karma Card’ Accounts

Karma is a cosmic incentive system.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
The Book of Life is a karmic comic book.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
“Every action, every thought, reaps its own corresponding rewards. Human suffering is not a sign of God’s, or Nature’s, anger with mankind. It is a sign, rather, of man’s ignorance of divine law. . . .
Such is the law of karma: As you sow, so shall you reap. If you sow evil, you will reap evil in the form of suffering. And if you sow goodness, you will reap goodness in the form of inner joy.”
~ Paramhansa Yogananda
“It is true that we are not bound. That is to say, the real Self has no bondage. And it is true that you will eventually return to your Source. But meanwhile, if you commit sins, as you call them, you have to face the consequences. You cannot escape them.”
~ Ramana Maharshi
Clear your past, to live as presence.

Clear your karma, to live your dharma.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
“To go from mortal to Buddha, you have to put an end to karma,
nurture your awareness, and accept what life brings.”
~ Bodhidharma

Coming from subtle planes to Earth
(the plane of time/space and causation)
the soul dons an “earth suit” – a human body/mind  –
as its vehicle to explore this realm.

Each such vehicle comes equipped with
a revolving “karma card” account.

The object of the visit is to clear all “karma card” debits,
without incurring new ones.

Until we close out all our “karma card” accounts,
our visits to Earth become endless revolving round trips
repeated in a different vehicle for each trip.

So, we’re here to try closing out
all our “karma card” accounts.

Afterlife?

“In order to know through experience what happens beyond death,

you must go deep within yourself.

In meditation, the truth will come to you.”

~ Shri Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas
“It is crucial to be mindful of death —
to contemplate that you will not remain long in
this life. If you are not aware of death, you will
fail to take advantage of this special human
life that you have already attained. It is
meaningful since, based on it, important
effects can be accomplished.”
~ Dalai Lama – From “Advice on Dying: And Living a Better Life” written with Jeffrey Hopkins, Ph.D.
“It is in dying to ego life,

that we are reborn to Eternal Life.”

~ Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (edited by Ron Rattner)

Q: Is there an afterlife?

A: After-life is NOW.

Q: Is there life after death?

A: There is no death – only Life.

Q: Then, what is it we call death?

A: A vacation:

Eternal life-force vacating a transient vehicle.

Surrender and Let Go of Ego ~ Quotes and Sutra Sayings

By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go.
But when you try and try, the world is beyond the winning.
~ Lao Tzu
“Surrender is faith that the power of Love can accomplish anything
even when you cannot foresee the outcome.”
~ Deepak Chopra
“They are the chosen ones who have surrendered.”
~ Rumi
Love is the sacrifice of will.
If you cannot leave will behind
You have no will at all.
~ Rumi
“In the end these things matter most:
How well did you love?
How fully did you love?
How deeply did you learn to let go?”
~ The Buddha
Q. How much “ego” do you need?
A. Just enough so that you don’t step in front of a bus.
~ Shunryu Suzuki Roshi

We have nothing to surrender
but the idea that
we’re someone,
with something
to surrender.
***
Let’s let go
and
let life live us,
as Love.
***
Let’s leave it to the
Lone Arranger.
***
Let’s let go, and “go with the flow”.*

*Being “in the flow” is thought-free, effortless, and focused
merging of intention, action, and awareness
as consciousness – consciously letting Life happen through you.

***

Tao is Now,
Tao is One,
Tao is Doer,
Tao will be done.
***
Tao will be done.
So let Tao do it.
***
Give your spiritual
‘power of attorney’
to God.
***
“Let go, and let God.”*

*Unity Church maxim
***

Leave it to the Lone Arranger.
***
Ego Antidote:
The root of all problems is
I/me/mine.
End it with antidote,
Thy/Thee/Thine.
***
Ego: Use it to lose it!
***
Immolate ego
in the fire of faith.
***
As ego goes
consciousness grows
until it Knows –
Itself.
***
Ego is free to choose,
but is never free.
Self does not choose,
but is ever free.
***
Our only choice
is to accept
or reject
“what is”.
***
Acceptance is pleasure;
rejection is suffering.
Acceptance is freedom;
rejection is bondage.
Acceptance is NOW;
rejection is then.
***
So, if choose you must,
then with faith and trust,
say “yes” to Life.
***
With radical trust
we do as we must.
***
The more we trust
the less we try.
***
Enter a state of enlightened amnesia:
Be now;
forget then.
Remember God;
forget the rest.
***
Forget who you think you are,
to remember what you really are.

Undo Ego!

In the pursuit of learning every day something is gained.
In the pursuit of Tao, every day something is dropped.
~ Lao Tzu
“Your task is not to seek for love,
but merely to seek and find
 all the barriers within yourself
that you have built against it.”
~ Rumi
On the path of undo we’ll never be through
’til we’re an undone ONE.

There’s nothing to do
but undo,

Until you’re through and undone.

there’s nothing to do,

But to Be –

What Is Life?

“What is life?  It is the flash of a firefly in the night.
It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime.
It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.”
~ Crowfoot, 1890
“Life is everything. Life is God.
Everything changes and moves and that movement is God. . .
To love life is to love God.”
~ Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace
Here is the test to find whether your mission on earth is finished.
If you’re alive, it isn’t.
~ Richard Bach

Throughout human history philosophers have speculated on perennially puzzling questions of life’s meaning, if any.

Especially following my 1992 retirement from legal practice,
I sometimes ‘channelled’ different theories about the meaning of life.

I share some with you now, not as spiritual truths but as mental speculations, in case you may – as I did – sometimes wonder why we’re here.

In reading them please remember that with a silent mind there are no questions and no answers – just choiceless awareness.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a word – an idea – with many meanings which are mental, not fundamental.
As beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
the meaning of “life” is what we think it to be.

But beyond our space/time/causality “reality” Life is not mental,
but Transcendental:
Life is Eternal Mystery.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is awakened Awareness.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is infinite experience
Of Infinite Potentiality
From infinite perspectives.

WHAT IS LIFE?
What is death?
In space/time polarity/causality reality,
life implies death;
life is the opposite of death.

So to know the meaning of life,
we must know the meaning of death.
When we Know the meaning of both life and death,
we shall know no death –
only awakened Awareness.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is aliveness.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is an “in a body” experience.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a continuous identity crisis:
An endless opportunity to transcend
entity identity.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is an idea game
in which we’re challenged
to make ideal
our ideas of what’s “real”.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is endless exploration of NOW.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is an experience/experiment in space/time.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a semantic space/time sojourn.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a round trip metaphoric journey,
on which we are destined to return to point of origin.
On return, we learn – we never left.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a journey: an ego trip.
Life is a journey: a mind trip.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a workshop for ego addicts; an ego trip.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a healing/wholing gnosis process.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a metaphoric metamorphosis process.
Gleaning meaning in matter,
we learn all that matters —
we learn all that matters is
LOVE!

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a mind field –
a field of dreams,
where all we ever see or seem
is but a dream within a dream.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a cosmic game of hide and seek.
Self hides in plain insight
and, knowingly or unknowingly,
we seek Self.
We seek and seek until we find
beyond the mind,
that we are what we seek –
that what we seek is the seeker.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a learning laboratory
for discovering immortality –
experimentally and experientially.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is suffering;
Life is mystery.

Life’s miseries are mental,
while it’s mystery is Transcendental.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a cosmic masquerade;
an endless comedy/tragedy/mystery drama.
The masquerade play continues with countless acts and scenes.

Each actor must participate in innumerable roles,
until each is ultimately unmasked,
with true identity revealed as
Common “I-ness”.

WHAT IS LIFE?
Life is a mystery school
in which knowingly or unknowingly
we are all students –
each learning about,
and  seeking to solve,
the same Mystery –
the mystery of Divinity.

Though we may never solve it,
we shall ever evolve it –
NOW!

Why Do We Rhyme?

“Rhyme, that enslaved queen,
that supreme charm of our poetry,
that creator of our meter.”
~ Victor Hugo
“Constantly risking absurdity and death
whenever he performs above the heads of his audience,
the poet, like an acrobat, climbs on rhyme
to a high wire of his own making.”
~ Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Dr.Seuss

Why do we rhyme?
Is there a reason?

A time for rhyme –
a rhyming season?

Or, do we just rhyme
without rhyme or reason?

Life’s in the Balance

“Harmony is the secret principle of life.”
~ Paramahansa Yogananda
“When there is harmony between the mind, heart and resolution
then nothing is impossible.”
~ Rig Veda
“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony.”
~ Thomas Merton
“Your hand opens and closes, opens and closes. If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralyzed. Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated as birds’ wings.”
~ Rumi, The Essential Rumi
“As long as you live, you will be subject to change, whether you will it or not – now glad, now sorrowful; now pleased, now displeased; now devout, now undevout; now vigorous, now slothful; now gloomy, now merry. But a wise man who is well taught in spiritual labor stands unshaken in all such things, and heeds little what he feels, or from what side the wind of instability blows.”
~ Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ
“As it acts in the world, the Tao is like the bending of a bow. The top is bent downward; the bottom is bent up. It adjusts excess and deficiency so that there is perfect balance. It takes from what is too much and gives to what isn’t enough. Those who try to control, who use force to protect their power, go against the direction of the Tao. They take from those who don’t have enough and give to those who have far too much. The Master can keep giving because there is no end to her wealth. She acts without expectation, succeeds without taking credit, and doesn’t think that she is better than anyone else.”
~ Lao Tzu *

Our life is in the balance,
Ever < NOW >,

‘Twixt our hopes
and our history,

On a fulcrum of Mystery,

Our life is in the balance,
Ever < NOW > !

Harmonic Resonation: Sutra Sayings

“Harmony is the secret principle of life.”
~ Paramahansa Yogananda
“When there is harmony between the mind, heart and resolution
then nothing is impossible.”
~ Rig Veda

Quicken and be
in harmony.

The higher your entrainment,
the greater your attainment.

Don’t disrupt and polarize,
but syncretize and harmonize.

Live harmlessly
in harmony.

Stay in cosmic synchrony,
as you play in Nature’s symphony.

How can there be harm in me
when I am perfect harmony?

As harmony we stay
out of harm’s way.

Let us consciously live conflict-free
as constant cosmic Harmony.

Lovingly let us ever Be
thought-free perfect Harmony.
