Bi-Polar Paradigm Disorder

“‘But I don’t want to go among mad people,’ said Alice.
‘Oh, you can’t help that,’ said the cat. ‘We’re all mad here.’”
~ Lewis Carroll
“Our separation of each other is an optical illusion of consciousness.”
~ Albert Einstein
“When the world goes mad,
one must accept madness as sanity;
since sanity is, in the last analysis,
nothing but the madness on which the whole world happens to agree.”
~ George Bernard Shaw

Wassily Kandinsky – Black Lines

We live in an age of mental malaise.

The world now suffers an epidemic
of bi-polar paradigm disorder.

This condition begins to arise when people
futilely try to divide the Indivisible,
by everywhere drawing imaginary border lines –
like “us and them”, “good and evil”, “God and Satan” etc..

These border-line people then get mentally unbalanced
and feel dis-eased and threatened by people
‘on the other side’ of their imaginary lines.

Their border-line thinking is not logical, but pathological.

Bi-polar paradigm disorder is closely related to another
wide-spread mental disorder now afflicting
most of Humankind – Chronic Belief Syndrome.

Researchers are looking for a common cure for both afflictions;
a cure which will provide Humankind with “relief from belief”.

However, they are presently unable to secure federal funding for their research project and don’t believe that such a cure is imminent.

Ron’s Commentary on “Bi-Polar Paradigm Disorder” and “Chronic Belief Syndrome”.

Dear Friends,

We live in an age of mental malaise.

In recent commentaries I have darkly described world society as insanely dystopian and Orwellian – as symptomatic of pandemic societal sickness.  And I have attributed much of our suffering to human ignorance, fear and greed fomented and exploited by psychopathic world political and corporate “leaders” selfishly serving interests of power and profits over people for a ‘Big Brother’ “deep state”

But today I offer a sure cure for all such sufferings – a true panacea and formula for alchemically transmuting dystopia to utopia.  Instead of complaining, today I’m optimistically explaining how we can and shall resolve our political problems.

Inspired by Dr. Seuss, I have identified and ‘diagnosed’ above as the fundamental causes of our societal insanity two widespread mental disorders: “Bi-Polar Paradigm Disorder” and “Chronic Belief Syndrome”.

Delusionally believing ourselves separate from and mortally threatened by perceived ‘others’, we compulsively fear them and fight ‘them’.  But we suffer from perception deception; what we think we see are mere illusory and unreal mental mirages – seemingly apparent but nonexistent.

Our hallucinatory mental problems cannot be solved from the same levels of consciousness that created them.

So, rather than prescribing new pills for our mental ills – offering only temporary symptomatic relief – today I am privileged to reveal natural and ‘open-source’ mental mood and awareness elevators, which are sure cures for all of Humankind’s illogical psychological problems.

Amazingly these sure cures are freely available – infinitely and eternally – within everyone and everything everywhere.  They are:

Universal Spirit, Being, Awareness, Bliss; Eternal Peace, LIFE, LIGHT, LOVE.

By uncovering, accessing and compassionately emanating these sure cures, we will inevitably solve and resolve all world problems and crises arising from Human ignorance and greed.

And so it shall BE!

Questions and Speculations About Thought

All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts, we make the world.”
~Buddha

what he thinks, he becomes.”
~ Gandhi
“This world is wrought with naught but thought.”

“Whatever we think, do, or say, changes this world in some way.”

“Nothing’s either good or bad,
but thinking makes it so.”
~ Shakespeare

All thoughts,
are thoughts
about thoughts.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
When all thoughts cease,
we are at peace.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Ron’s Introduction to His Ruminations and Speculations About Thought:

Until my mid-life spiritual awakening, I had accepted my thoughts and rational powers of discrimination as part of life associated with my physical body and brain, but never considered or understood the miraculous power of thought or the nature and importance of the thought process, or of what we call the mind.

Then, on New Years Eve 1974/5, I had a life changing (out of body) OOB experience in which I perceived each of my thoughts as a separate surreal vividly colored kaleidoscopic form.

Whereupon, after that OOB experience, I began to reflect deeply about the power and nature of thought.

Ultimately, from inner and outer experiences I surmised that our entire space/time/causality reality arises only from our projected thought forms; that our reality isn’t ‘real’, but merely a holographic and kaleidoscopic theater of the mind which Albert Einstein correctly described as “merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one”; and with his observation that “our separation of each other is an optical illusion of consciousness.”

Mindfully watching my thoughts and learning to choose or still or them has been tremendously helpful in bringing me a happy life. And I have learned that happiness is a choice; that our thoughts can be powerfully important, and that “when all thoughts cease, we are at peace.”

Thus I’ve become convinced that learning to choose our thoughts and mental attitude can bring us great happiness. And I encourage you to join me in attentively watching, guiding, and stilling the mind.

To inspire your curiosity about our miraculous power of thought, its origins and potentials, and how it functions, here are some of my musings.

Questions and Speculations About Thought

Q. What is thinking?

A. A process in awareness.

Q. What do we think about?

A. Past thoughts.

Q. What are thoughts?

A. Subtle energy forms arising in and from Awareness.

Q. Is all thought taught?

A. Most thoughts are taught thoughts.

Q. Is “creation” a thought process?

A. Yes, this is a mental reality.

“This world is wrought with naught but thought.”
“Inner infinity spawns outer reality.”

Q. Do we participate in “creation”?

A. Yes.

“Whatever we think, do, or say, changes this world in some way.”

Q. Can thoughts be habitual, subliminal or subconscious?

A. Yes, insofar as human consciousness is clouded and limited.

Q. Are there thoughts beyond brains?

A. Yes. Thoughts are subtle energy forms. Energy’s endless. So, thoughts can remain beyond the brain.

Q. Are thoughts “now” or “then”?

A. Thoughts are always from the past – ever “then”, never “now”;
while Life is “now” – ever now, never then.

Q. Are all your prior answers absolutely accurate?

A. God knows, I don’t.

These are Ron’s ruminations and speculations and ‘food for your thoughts’.

“Creation”/ “Evolution”/ Rumination

“Whence come I and whither go I?
That is the great unfathomable question,
the same for every one of us.
Science has no answer to it.”

~ Max Planck
“We never cease to stand like curious children before the great Mystery into which we were born.”
~ Albert Einstein
“The important thing is not to stop questioning.
Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day.
Never lose a holy curiosity.”
~ Albert Einstein
“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”
~ Dr. Seuss
The quest is in the question.
The question is the answer.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
When questioning begins, certainty ends.
When certainty ends, wisdom begins.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Was space/time causality “reality” ‘created’ 5000 years ago
– or previously?

Or is “reality” ever ‘created’ instant by instant
– ever NOW?

Is there a Divine ‘design plan’?

If so, who is the Divine ‘designer’?  Is S/HE friendly?

And if so, why and how did Divinity ‘design’ “reality”?

Is evolution ever implicit in “creation”?

If evolution happens, who/what evolves:
Living organisms? ‘Human consciousness’?  “Life”? “Reality”?

Is evolution inevitable, or just optional;
is it imperative, or just elective?

Do we always evolve, or sometimes devolve?

What is our Source?  Do we emerge from Divinity?

After ‘creation’, do we seek our Source, as a matter of course?

Do we ultimately dissolve in Divinity – or merge with Mystery?

Does Spirit mind,
and does mind matter?

What really matters?

It’s all MYSTERY!

Life Is Perpetual; Happiness Is Optional

”Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it.
What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.”
~ Sri Ramana Maharshi
“Happiness is the absence of the striving for happiness.”
~ Chuang-Tzu
“The soul is eternal, all-pervading, unmodifiable, immovable and primordial.”
“The soul never takes birth and never dies at any time
nor does it come into being again when the body is created.
The soul is birthless, eternal, imperishable and timeless
and is never destroyed when the body is destroyed.
Just as a man giving up old worn out garments accepts other new apparel, in the same way the embodied soul giving up old and worn out bodies verily accepts new bodies.”
~ Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2

Life is perpetual;
Happiness is optional.

God gives Life eternal.
Humankind makes it sublime or infernal.

Timeless delight,
or endless night:

However we choose it,
we never can lose it.

New Paradigm-ism

“[T]he reality of the world today is that grounding ethics in religion is no longer adequate.
This is why I believe the time has come to find a way of thinking about spirituality and ethics that is beyond religion.”
~ H.H. the Dalai Lama – Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World
“Your task is not to seek for love,
but merely to seek and find
 all the barriers within yourself
that you have built against it.”
~ Rumi
“I consider myself a Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, and Confucian.”
~ Gandhi
“Not Christian or Jew or Muslim,
not Hindu, Buddhist, Sufi or Zen.
Not any religion, or cultural system.
I am not from the East or the West, nor out of the ocean or up
from the ground,
not natural or ethereal, not composed of elements at all.
I do not exist, am not an entity in this world
 or the next,
did not descend from Adam and Eve
or any origin story.
My place is placeless, a trace of the traceless.
 Neither body nor soul.
I belong to the beloved
have seen the two worlds as one
and that one call to and know,
First, last, outer, inner, only that
breath breathing human.”
~ Rumi, ‘Only Breath’
“There is only one God,
the same God regardless of the labels applied by religion. …
There is only one religion, the religion of Love;
There is only one language, the language of the Heart;
There is only one caste, the caste of Humanity”
~ Sathya Sai Baba
“Wherever I look, I see men quarreling in the name of religion — Hindus, Mohammendans, Brahmos, Vaishnavas, and the rest.
But they never reflect that He who is called Krishna is also called Siva, and bears the name of the Primal Energy, Jesus, and Allah as well–
the same Rama with a thousand names.
A lake has several ghats.
At one the Hindus take water in pitchers and call it ‘jal’; at another the Mussalmans take water in leather bags and call it ‘pani’. At a third the Christians call it ‘water’.
Can we imagine that it is not ‘jal’, but only ‘pani’ or ‘water’?
How ridiculous! The substance is One under different names, and everyone is seeking the same substance;
only climate, temperament, and name create differences.
Let each man follow his own path. If he sincerely and ardently wishes to know God, peace be unto him!
He will surely realize Him.”
~ Sri Ramakrishna, The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna
“Follow dharma, not dogma.”
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
“If there is love in your heart you don’t have to worry about rules.”
~ Shri Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas

Let’s get beyond
Catholicism – Protestantism – Judaism – Mohammedanism –
Hinduism – Buddhism – Taoism – Confucianism – Shamanism –
and all other belief “isms”.

It’s time to end
religious ism schisms.

It’s time to blend religion-ism
with syncretism.

So, let us transcend
Ism dogmatism

And live ismlessly as

LOVE!

Paradise Paradoxities

“He who has not looked on Sorrow will never see Joy.”
“… joy and sorrow are inseparable. . .
together they come and when one sits alone with you . . .
remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.”
~ Kahlil Gibran
“The deeper that sorrow carves into your being,
the more joy you can contain.”

“None can reach Heaven who has not passed through hell”
~ Sri Aurobindo -“Savitri,” Book II, Canto VIII.
“Only by joy and sorrow does a person know anything about themselves and their destiny.
They learn what to do and what to avoid.”
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We can not reach heaven
without passing through hell.

In duality domain
ev’ry pleasure’s
wrapped in pain.

Within each joy
is an oy/oy/oy.

So, when you’re feeling forlorn,
remember this:

Misery is the mother of Bliss.

We’re Just Butterflies In A Caterpillar World – A Sutra Song Synchronicity Story

Butterflies are living
metaphors for metamorphosis.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Viceroy Butterfly

Ron’s Introduction and Explanation

After my mid-life spiritual awakening and newfound interest in spiritual evolution, I began regularly and reflectively to walk alone by San Francisco Bay, as a kind of informal spiritual practice.

While walking by the Bay, I synchronistically began “channeling” spiritual sayings, rhymes and poems. Often, too, I’d spontaneously sing original melodies to accompany my poems and rhymes. As I walked, I regularly wrote the words that came to me. But, mostly I forgot the melodies, which I couldn’t write.

One of the few songs with melody that I remembered, I called “Come Be Butterflies in a Caterpillar World.” It was “channelled” as I reflected on beautiful butterflies as living metaphors for metamorphosis.

Until very recently there was no professional recording of the butterfly song. But now, Rob Tobias, an Oregon musician/songwriter/singer and videographer is releasing a new CD including the song. Rob has been motivated by continuing synchronicities to perform and record the butterfly song.

In November 2008, Rob began filming me for a biographical documentary video project, “Walks With Ron”. In sharing my stories on film with Rob, I sang the caterpillar song. Rob liked it, worked out musical notation, and began singing the song solo and in performances with his band, The Northwest Express.

In early July 2012, Rob repeatedly sang the song at the Oregon Country Faire, to appreciative audiences. On returning home to Eugene, he was amazed to find that someone anonymously had posted a sign on a telephone pole across from his house, that said, “Be a Butterfly in a Caterpillar World.”

Here it is:

Despite repeated inquiries, Rob could not discover the sign’s mysterious origin. But after viewing its message countless times, in September 2012 Rob decided to give a Rosh Hashanah talk about metamorphosis and transformative change as co-leader of a Jewish Renewal group in Eugene. On explaining this decision to his co-leaders, Rob offered to show them the butterfly sign which had been in place earlier that day. But on returning home with his friends, Rob discovered that the sign had suddenly disappeared, just as mysteriously as it had suddenly appeared in July.

In October 2012, during a trip to New England, Rob unexpectedly and synchronistically performed the butterfly song in Burlington, Vermont at a school assembly of over 300 enthusiastic children, and at a hipster pub where four children mysteriously appeared to do a butterfly dance. [A youtube video of Rob’s performance at the school assembly is embedded below.]

On returning to Eugene, Rob decided to record the butterfly song. You can listen to his recording at RobTobias.com. Also, below I am posting the song’s original lyrics with an mp3 recording of me singing them.

As a heartfelt participant in our collective evolutionary transformation into an enlightened new age of harmony, peace and joy, I humbly offer this butterfly song.

To Life! Enjoy!!

We’re Just Butterflies In A Caterpillar World

We’re just butterflies,
We’re just butterflies,
We’re just butterflies,
In a caterpillar world.

Hey we’re flyin’ high,
See us flutter by,
Way up in the sky,
In a caterpillar world.

[1st Refrain]

After many moons
In our cocoons,
Totally transformed we’ve been,
From chrysalis to crystaline.

Then, leaving cares and apprehensions
We’ve flown to joyous new dimensions.
But the world keeps creeping and crawling,
So we’re just flying and calling.

Come be butterflies,
Come be butterflies,
Come be butterflies,
O’er a caterpillar world.

Wake up and arise,
Fly up to the skies,
Come be butterflies
From a caterpillar world.

Come now claim your prize
To be very wise
Flying through the skies
O’er a caterpillar world

[2nd Refrain]

Until bye and bye,
Never knowing why,
You’ve soared ever high
To a beautiful heaven above.

[2nd Refrain]

Players’ Prayer

“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players”
~ William Shakespeare [As You Like It 2/7]

May we bless the whole
as we play our role
in the cosmic theater of life.

Ever a part in it,
never apart from it,
in happiness or strife.

May we grow wise and harmonize,
though chaos seems e’er rife.

‘Til we’re the Whole- and not the role,
and holiness is Life.

Afterlife?

“In order to know through experience what happens beyond death,

you must go deep within yourself.

In meditation, the truth will come to you.”

~ Shri Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas
“It is crucial to be mindful of death —
to contemplate that you will not remain long in
this life. If you are not aware of death, you will
fail to take advantage of this special human
life that you have already attained. It is
meaningful since, based on it, important
effects can be accomplished.”
~ Dalai Lama – From “Advice on Dying: And Living a Better Life” written with Jeffrey Hopkins, Ph.D.
“It is in dying to ego life,

that we are reborn to Eternal Life.”

~ Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (edited by Ron Rattner)

Q: Is there an afterlife?

A: After-life is NOW.

Q: Is there life after death?

A: There is no death – only Life.

Q: Then, what is it we call death?

A: A vacation:

Eternal life-force vacating a transient vehicle.
