What is “Enlightenment”? ~ Quotations

“Knowing others is wisdom,
knowing your Self is enlightenment.”

~ Lao Tzu
“There is no such thing as
enlightenment,
the realization of that fact is
itself enlightenment.”
~ Nisargadatta Maharaj

What is “Enlightenment”?

“Personal entity and enlightenment cannot go together.”
~ Nisargadatta Maharaj

“Strictly speaking there are no enlightened people,
there is only enlightened activity.”
~ Suzuki Roshi

“There is no enlightenment outside of daily life.”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh

“There are many paths to enlightenment.
Be sure to take one with a heart.”
~ Lao Tzu

“Knowledge is structured in consciousness.
The process of education takes place in the field of consciousness;
the prerequisite to complete education is therefore
the full development of consciousness — enlightenment.
Knowledge is not the basis of enlightenment,
enlightenment is the basis of knowledge.”
~ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

“According to Vedanta, there are only two symptoms of enlightenment, just two indications that a transformation is taking place within you toward a higher consciousness. The first symptom is that you stop worrying. Things don’t bother you anymore. You become light-hearted and full of joy. The second symptom is that you encounter more and more meaningful coincidences in your life, more and more synchronicities. And this accelerates to the point where you actually experience the miraculous.”
~ Deepak Chopra (Synchrodestiny)

“The word enlightenment conjures up the idea of some superhuman accomplishment, and the ego likes to keep it that way, but it is simply our natural state of felt oneness with being. It is a state of connectedness with something immeasurable and indestructible, something that, almost paradoxically, is essentially you and yet much greater than you. It is finding true your true nature beyond name and form. The inability to feel this connectedness gives rise to the illusion of separation, from yourself and from the world around you. You then perceive yourself, consciously or unconsciously, as an isolated fragment. Fear arises, and conflicts within and without become the norm.”
~ Eckhart Tolle, Practicing the Power of Now

“Enlightenment” is Being –
beyond entity identity.
Ego and “enlightenment” cannot coexist.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Ron’s Commentary on What is “Enlightenment”?

Dear Friends,

I am privileged to share with you today key quotations from spiritual teachers about the perennial process of inner illumination – or “enlightenment”.

In memoirs titled “Transcending Transcendence” I’ve told about my conscious pursuit of “enlightenment” as a spiritual goal, until gradually I abandoned goal oriented spiritual seeking, and – as “An Uncertain Undue” – intuitively began surrendering to the Infinite, with more and more heartfelt faith in The Lone Arranger.

I realized that “enlightenment” is only a word – a mere mental concept with different meanings for different people.  So I determined that in this illusory world “enlightenment” is not an ultimate destination, but an evolutionary process; that beyond space/time/causality ‘reality’ there are no concepts – only ineffable Mystery.

As a spiritually unenlightened “Uncertain Undo”, I’ve ‘heretically’ decided that Suzuki Roshi was right in observing that

“there are no [fully] enlightened people, . . only enlightened activity”.

In my view incarnation is limitation.  So no completely “enlightened” person can manifest all infinite aspects of non-duality Reality – of limitless LOVE.  Therefore, as a devotional non-dualist, I’ve decided that Nisargadatta Maharaj was paradoxically right in saying that in this illusory world:

“There is no such thing as enlightenment,
the realization of that fact is itself enlightenment.”

~ Nisargadatta Maharaj

I respectfully suggest that – except for rare Avatars, Buddhas or Bodhisattvas – we all appear here on the Earth Branch of the great Cosmic University to evolve spiritually by learning LOVE and being LOVE; and that in this ever impermanent space time “reality” our challenge is to skillfully stay in harmony with always changing energy – whether perceptible or imperceptible; that as times change our “enlightened” behaviors must change; that historically enlightened behaviors may not still be appropriate in this modern age of mental malaise.

For me perpetual change challenges us to always live life presently – ‘in the zone’ – by constantly responding appropriately, skillfully and spontaneously to ever changing earth energies.  So we are learning to experience life spontaneously, like skilled master musicians in a jam session – always harmoniously responding or blending with each sensed musical sound or soundless space.

But if we had mastered that “enlightened” process of always being ‘in the zone’, we wouldn’t be here.  Consider these apt quotes from popular spiritual authors:

“Here is the test to find whether your mission on earth is finished. If you’re alive, it isn’t.”
~ Richard Bach

“If you’re not dead yet, you’re not done yet.”
~ Elizabeth Gilbert (quoting her mother)

As long as we incarnate on Earth, participation in the “enlightenment” process entails learning mindfully “to let go, and go with the flow” – and to “leave it to the Lone Arranger.”    Moreover, active pursuit of “enlightenment” can become a subtle ego trap, to be averted.  So it’s best to surrender because:

“What you seek is seeking you.”
~ Rumi

Thus, while ever honoring my beloved Guruji as guiding and inspiring ‘outer authority’, I’ve more and more relied on inner intuitive authority while experiencing the earth-life “enlightenment” process.  And such reliance has brought an ever happier life.

Knowingly or unknowingly we are all on a spiritual path to discover within our true Self identity – which ‘is seeking us’.  So this essay is offered to help us realize ever increasing inner happiness by finding and following our Sacred Heart.

And so may it be!

Time Cycling

Tao and Zen
are NOW,
not then.
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings
“Life can be found only in the present moment.

The past is gone, the future is not yet here,

and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment,

we cannot be in touch with life.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh
“Remember then: there is only one time that is important – Now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power.”
~ Leo Tolstoy

“I have realized that the past and future are real illusions,
that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.
”
~ Alan Watts
“Space and time are not conditions in which we live,
they are modes in which we think.”
“The distinction between past, present, and future
is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”
~ Albert Einstein
A wise man, recognizing that the world is but an illusion,
does not act as if it is real, so he escapes the suffering.”
~ Buddha

Ron’s 2018 explanation of “Time Cycling”

Dear Friends,

Over forty years ago, I began questioning the ‘reality’ of serial time after experiencing many ‘mind-blowing’ pre-cognitive synchronicities during a 1977 week in New York City. (See  Synchronicity Story: An Amazing Experiment With Time )

Ultimately after reflecting on these and many more amazing synchronicities, and on teachings of Gautama Buddha and other mystic masters, I became persuaded that Einstein accurately described the illusory nature of space/time/reality as “merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”; that “the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion”; and, that  “space and time are not conditions in which we live, [but] modes in which we think.”

Nonetheless, after realizing the mystical truth about the illusionary but persistent nature of space and time, it has been very difficult for me to remember and live that truth.  But I am often reminded of it by increasingly frequent synchronicities manifesting in my life, which I deem emblematic of Reality beyond time. Synchronicities are now happening for me so frequently that mostly I no longer find “time” to discuss or write about them.

While reflecting about the illusionary but persistent nature of time, I wrote many poems and articles about it. One of those poems, “Time Cycling”, came from a realization that our common vernacular tacitly imbues an unthinking acceptance of the imagined reality of illusory time.

That poem is posted above for your entertainment and edification. I hope you’ll enjoy its whimsical words as you listen to my mp3 oral recitation of them.

May this poetry, with thoughts about time and synchronicity, inspire ever more timeless happiness in our lives.

And so may it be!

Let’s Learn To Be – Memory Free – NOW!

“Mind is memory, at whatever level, by whatever name you call it; mind is the product of the past, it is founded on the past, which is memory, a conditioned state.”
“Truth is not a memory, because truth is ever new, constantly transforming itself. (M)emory is a hindrance to the understanding of what is. The timeless can be only when memory, which is the `me’ and the `mine’, ceases.”
~ J. Krishnamurti
Forget who you think you are
to know what you really are.

Let’s Learn To Be – Memory Free – NOW!

The power of memory
is a great gift.

But the power authentically
to BE –
beyond memory –
is a greater gift.

For memory is then,
while life is
NOW.

So, let’s learn to BE
– Memory Free –

NOW!

Ron’s explanation of “Let’s Learn To Be – Memory Free – NOW”

Dear Friends,

After my spiritual awakening I intuited that “This world is wrought with naught but thought”. Later I discovered Buddhist sutras stating that “With our thoughts, we make the world.”

Whereupon, I became (and remain) extremely curious about the nature of “mind” – which is our ‘thought processor’.

And soon thereafter I discovered the above teachings of Indian sage J. Krishnamurti that “mind is memory” and “a hindrance to the understanding of” Truth, which is always new and NOW.

Inspired by Krishnamurti I have written many sutras, poems, and essays about “mind” as memory. One of those poems, “Let’s Learn To Be – Memory Free – NOW!” is posted above to help remind us that “Life is NOW, ever NOW, never then”.

That

“Life can be found only in the present moment.

The past is gone, the future is not yet here,

and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment,

we cannot be in touch with life.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Awakening

“We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh
“My appointed work is to awaken the divine nature that is within.”
~ Peace Pilgrim
“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart.
Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”
~  Carl Gustav Jung
My friends, it is through the establishment of the clarity of mindfulness
that you let go of grasping after past and future,
overcome attachment and grief,
abandon all clinging and anxiety,
and awaken an unshakable freedom of heart,
here and now.
~ Buddha [the Awakened One]
“Those who awaken never rest in one place.
Like swans, they rise and leave the lake.
On the air they rise and fly an invisible course.
Their food is knowledge.
They live on emptiness.
They have seen how to break free.
Who can follow them?
~ Buddha [the Awakened One]
“[An] awakened state is possible only when there is …
critical self-awareness devoid of judgment.”
~ J. Krishnamurti
“If you want to awaken all of humanity,
then awaken all of yourself.
If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world,
then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself.”
~ Lao Tzu , Hua Hu Ching

Awakening

Through eons of ignorance,
we have been asleep –

Dreaming “I am a body,
a name, a form, a story” separate from
the rest of “reality”.

Now, blessed with a precious human
existence and truth teachings,
we are awakening gradually,

And experiencing ever more
moments of living truth.

But still, from the habits of countless
lives of ignorance,
we suffer a kind of spiritual narcolepcy –
involuntarily falling asleep again and again.

Only when those habits are
totally transcended,
will we awaken –

FOREVER!

Ron’s Dedication of “Awakening”

As recognized by Venerable Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh, awakening from our illusion of separateness to our common Divinity is the essential purpose of spiritual evolution.

Thus the word “Buddha” is not just a name but an honorific title, meaning in Sanskrit “one who is awake” to Reality.

So the foregoing verses gratefully honor and are dedicated to all “awakened” and awakening ones – whether historically known or unknown – who help other beings awaken from a fearfully persistent illusion of individual mortality to joyous realization of our deathless ONENESS as Eternal Divinity.

May such ‘awakened ones’ inspire – in this precious lifetime – our societal realization of eternal oneness of Life as LOVE.

And so shall it be!

That Lives in Us ~ by Rumi

“From wonder into wonder existence opens.”
~ Lao Tzu
“Consciousness is the basis of all life
and the field of all possibilities.
Its nature is to expand and unfold its full potential.
The impulse to evolve is thus inherent in the very nature of life.”
~ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
“There are no mistakes, no coincidences,
all events are blessings given to us to learn from.”
~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful
for the evolution of your consciousness.”
~ Eckhart Tolle
Life can be found only in the present moment.
The past is gone, the future is not yet here, and if we do not go back to ourselves in the present moment, we cannot be in touch with life.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh

That Lives in Us ~ by Rumi

If you put your hands on this oar with me,
they will never harm another, and they will come to find
they hold everything you want.

If you put your hands on this oar with me, they would no longer
lift anything to your
mouth that might wound your precious land –
that sacred earth that is your body.

If you put your soul against this oar with me,
the power that made the universe will enter your sinew
from a source not outside your limbs, but from a holy realm
that lives in us.

Exuberant is existence, time a husk.
When the moment cracks open, ecstasy leaps out and devours space;
love goes mad with the blessings, like my words give.

Why lay yourself on the torturer’s rack of the past and the future?
The mind that tries to shape tomorrow beyond its capacities
will find no rest.

Be kind to yourself, dear – to our innocent follies.
Forget any sounds or touch you knew that did not help you dance.

You will come to see that all evolves us.

( Love Poems From God: Twelve Sacred Voices from the East and West by Daniel Ladinsky )

More Enlightened Rumi Wisdom Words

says the completely surrendered sheik,
who is an ocean for all beings.”

“When you do things from your soul,
you feel a river moving in you, a joy.”

“There is a life-force within your soul,
seek that life.
There is a gem in the mountain of your body,
seek that mine.
O traveler,
if you are in search of that
Don’t look outside,
look inside yourself and seek that.”

“Remember, the entrance door to the sanctuary is inside you.”

“I have lived on the lip
 of insanity,

wanting to know reasons,

knocking on a door.

It opens.

I’ve been knocking from the inside.”

“The world is a prison and we are the prisoners:
Dig a hole in the prison and let yourself out!”

“You were born with wings.

Why prefer to crawl through life?”

when the door is so wide open?
”

“I long to escape the prison of my ego
 and lose myself in you.”

”

You have been a prisoner of a little pond,

I am the ocean and its turbulent flood.

Come merge with me, leave this world of ignorance.

Be with me, I will open the gate to your love.”

Presence – Our Greatest Gift

Each person has different
talents, interests and abilities.

But, all people share
one common gift:

Consciousness, awareness, presence.

Life’s essence is Presence.

Presence is our greatest gift.

And the greatest gift we’ve been given,

Is the greatest gift we can give –

NOW and forever.
