Don’t Seize the Moment

“He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity’s sun rise.”
~ William Blake

“The more we live moment by moment,
the more momentous our lives.”
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Don’t Seize the Moment

Live moment by moment.

The more we live moment by moment,
the more momentous our lives.

Each moment is perfect;
it expands infinitely and eternally.

So, mindfully welcome each moment;
but don’t try to seize it – or freeze it.

Trying to seize it – or freeze it, we’ll spoil it.

Say “yes” to each moment;
accept it, and don’t try to capture it.

We never can capture
the rapture of NOW.

Let each moment be –
let it go, let it flow.

And then, timeless Peace
shall we ever – KNOW.

Ron’s explanation and dedication of “Don’t Seize the Moment”

Dear Friends,

The above “Don’t Seize the Moment” poem was inspired by this enlightened verse from 18th century English visionary artist and poet William Blake:

“He who binds to himself a joy

Does the winged life destroy;

But he who kisses the joy as it flies

Lives in eternity’s sun rise.”

For millennia mystics have recognized the permanent-impermanence of all forms and experiences in our space/time energetic ‘reality’ – an insight now confirmed by quantum physicists.

Thus Buddhists have realized the futility of ego attachments to fleeting earthly forms and experiences, which are like an ephemeral mirage; and, that all such attachments inevitably lead to suffering.  That living love and letting go of ego ultimately matter most in our earth lives.

So Blake’s elegantly enlightened verse is consistent with Buddhist wisdom. And it especially inspired my “Don’t Seize the Moment” line that:

“We never can capture the rapture of NOW”.

The foregoing verses are dedicated to reminding us of the permanent impermanence of everything/everyone/everywhere; and, thereby to encourage us to become ever less attached and judgmental, while leading ever happier lives.

May they inspire us to let go of ego and let life live us as LOVE!

Thereby may we ultimately realize our common spiritual self-identity as Infinite Awareness beyond time – beyond birth and death.

And so shall it be!

Solar System

Dear Spiritual Sisters and Brothers –
Children of the Divine –

As fellow travelers on spaceship Earth,
let us welcome this new year not only
as the beginning of another of our precious planet’s
annual revolutions around the sun,

But as the dawning of an enlightened new age.

As Earth revolves,
let us resolve
collectively, consciously and cooperatively,
to compassionately participate together in an evolutionary leap
into an auspicious new age of harmony, peace and joy,
for all Humankind and for all life on our precious planet.

The personal and planetary are intimately connected.

Just as dreamers ‘create’ their dreams,
together we are a ‘dream-team’,
dreaming our world into being; and,
consciously or unconsciously creating a ‘common dream’.

So, rather than just wishing that 2019 be a wonderful year,
or passively awaiting fulfillment of promising prophesies,
let us actively actualize our collective aspiration
for evolutionary transformation,

With peace on earth and goodwill to all.

A resolution can be both a wish or determination to do something,
AND an accomplishment and manifestation of that wish.

So, as a planetary family, let us NOW
resolve to resolve our pressing international and interpersonal problems –
problems that we cannot resolve alone.

To fulfill our deepest aspirations,
let us envision, imagine and see
our precious planet as we wish it to be,

And then – to manifest our vision –
let us compassionately contribute our own unique gifts
from our own unique perspectives,
in our own unique ways.

To help us envision the world as we wish it to be,
embedded below are live video performances by John Lennon
of his inspired and ever inspiring song “Imagine”.

May John’s visionary message
that together we can “live as one”
encourage us to ever more manifest
the immense beauty and compassion
of our true inner nature and limitless potentiality,
and thereby to transcend all obstacles as –
LOVE.

AND SO MAY IT BE!

Ron’s explanation and dedication of this Happy New Year message

As we begin another new year, this is a traditional time for deep reflection on our lives.

For many people these are dark and divisive times, unprecedented in their lives. But current painful world turmoil can be insightfully seen as dark times before an inevitable dawn; times with infinite evolutionary opportunities for societal spiritual awakening and a new era of human harmony and conscious connection with each other and with Nature.

So rather than curse the darkness, let us lovingly light evolutionary candles.

To inspire societal spiritual awakening, the above verses urge that as earthly spiritual siblings we jointly resolve to resolve our critical interpersonal, international and ecological planetary problems; crises which can be resolved through awakened awareness of how and why we humans have caused them, and can cure them.

As passengers on ‘spaceship Earth’, we must cherish and not scuttle it;
we must stop polluting and unsustainably exploiting and destroying our precious planet’s life-forms and ecology, and live peacefully, sustainably and harmoniously with each other and all other life-forms.

Jesus told us: “You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.” [Psalm 82: 6; John 10:34]  “I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there” and it will move.” [Matthew 17:20]

Thus, we are reminded that we are not mere powerless perceivers of our “reality”, but a ‘dream-team’ knowingly or unknowingly creating it.  So with deep and abiding faith in our collective capacity to fulfill our deepest aspirations, let us join as a global family to envision, imagine and see our precious planet as we wish and intend it to be.

And with such faith, may we cooperatively, harmoniously and lovingly resolve our common crises for our common good, with each one contributing our own unique gifts from our own unique perspectives, in our own unique ways.  May we soon reach a tipping point, when a critical mass of Humankind will uplift all human consciousness to resolve the critical mess now threatening us.

Ever mindful of our Oneness with all Life on our precious planet, let us choose to act with loving-kindness and compassion for everyone everywhere. Rather than worry or be afraid, let us remember that

“The only thing we have to fear is…fear itself.”

~ Franklin D. Roosevelt, first inaugural address

The heaviest rain comes from the darkest clouds.”
~ Rumi

Sunrise, sunset

“Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears”
~ Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock – “Fiddler on the Roof”
“What is life?
It is the flash of a firefly in the night.
It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime.
It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.”
~ Crowfoot, 1890
“Thus shall ye think of all this fleeting world:
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream;
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.”
~ Buddha: Diamond Sutra

How well did you love?
How fully did you love?
How deeply did you learn to let go?”

Fiddler on the Roof

Dear Friends,

As students on the Earth branch of the great Cosmic University, we are commencing a new year and new season of human matriculation, rotation and revolution in our space/time solar system.

In these critical times, our species has caused imminent ecological and nuclear threats to all life forms on earth. Yet we have gained unprecedented opportunities for technologically transcending our most critical problems.

Can we avert catastrophe and enter an enlightened ‘new age’?
How can we best live with the inevitable ‘ups and downs’ of space/time duality “reality”, which are always “laden with happiness and tears”?

To encourage reflection on these perennial philosophical questions, I have embedded below a poignant video performance of “Sunrise, sunset” a classic song from Fiddler on the Roof, (with lyrics and music composed by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock).

May this affective song inspire transcendence of our ‘up and down’ lifetime problems and realization that what matters most during our fleeting earthly lives is, as the Buddha taught:

“How well did [we] love?
How fully did [we] love?
How deeply did [we] learn to let go?”

And so may it be!

Imagine – The World Will Live As One

Dear Friends,

Almost forty years ago our great ex-Beatles visionary ancestor, John Lennon was too soon taken from us (at age forty).  But the luminous light of his eternal soul continues to bless and inspire us.

In this holy season of Eternal Light, it is especially appropriate that we remember and honor him.

So I have posted below lyrics and two live video performances of John singing “Imagine”,
his inspired and inspiring expression of our shared aspiration for enduring planetary peace and happiness.

May these classic performances inspire us to remember that together we can and must
“live as one” with compassion for everyone everywhere, while never forgetting that

“All we need is LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.”

And so shall it be!

John Lennon – “Imagine” (live performance)

“Imagine”

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the world will live as one

~ John Lennon

Solstice Salutations and Invocations For a Peaceful and Happy New Age

“One great question underlies our experience, whether we think about it or not: what is the purpose of life? From the moment of birth every human being wants happiness and does not want suffering. Neither social conditioning nor education nor ideology affects this. From the very core of our being, we simply desire contentment. Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring about the greatest degree of happiness.”
~ H.H. Dalai Lama
“The world is so unhappy because it is ignorant of the true Self.
Man’s real nature is happiness. Happiness is inborn in the true Self. Man’s search for happiness is an unconscious search for his true Self. The true Self is imperishable; therefore, when a man finds it, he finds a happiness which does not come to an end.”
~ Ramana Maharshi

Dear Friends,

To brighten our holiday solstice season – and the rest of our lifetimes –
today I’m privileged to share a sure cure for all our earthly sufferings –
a true panacea for transmuting all our sorrows and sufferings to eternal Joy.

Thanks to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and The Beatles, I have ‘discovered’ an open-Source solution for all of Humanity’s problems –
problems which cannot be solved from the same levels of consciousness that created them.

All of our problems and sufferings have arisen from apparent lack of LOVE.

So, to solve and cure them

“All we need is LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.”

Accordingly, I have posted the above wisdom quotes about “Love” and have embedded below a video of the original 1968 Beatles recording session of their classic song, “All You Need Is Love”, followed by the lyrics composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

May these inspiring “Love” postings help brighten our holiday solstice season – and the rest of our lives.

And so may it be!

Lyrics – “All You Need Is Love”

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung.
Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game
It’s easy.

Nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time
It’s easy.

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love,
Love is all you need

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

Nothing you can know that isn’t known
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown

There’s nowhere you can be,
that isn’t where you’re meant to be

It’s easy.

All you need is love

All you need is love

How Can We Become Immortal?

The dewdrop belongs to the sea.
Separated, it is vulnerable to the sun and wind and other elements of nature;
but when the droplet returns its source, it becomes magnified in oneness with the sea.
So it is with your life.  United to God you become immortal.”

~ Paramahansa Yogananda
What is birth? Is it of the “I-thought” or of the body?
Is “I” separate from the body or identical? How did this “I-thought” arise?
Is the “I-thought” your nature? Or is something else your nature?
The “I” of the wise man includes the body but he does not identify himself with the body. For there cannot be anything apart from “I” for him.
If the body falls, there is no loss for the “I”. “I” remains the same.
If the body feels dead, let it raise the question. Being inert, it cannot “I”.
“I” never dies and does not ask. Who then dies? Who asks?
~ Sri Ramana Maharshi
“Eternal Life is gained by utter abandonment of one’s own [ego] life.
When God appears to His ardent lover the lover is absorbed in Him, and not so much as a hair of the lover remains.
True lovers are as shadows, and when the sun shines in glory
the shadows vanish away.
He is a true lover to God to whom God says,
“I am thine, and thou art mine! ”
~ Rumi
“The soul is eternal, all-pervading, unmodifiable, immovable and primordial.”

“The soul never takes birth and never dies at any time,
nor does it come into being again when the body is created.
The soul is birthless, eternal, imperishable and timeless,
and is never destroyed when the body is destroyed.
Just as a man giving up old worn out garments accepts other new apparel, in the same way the embodied soul giving up old and worn out bodies verily accepts new bodies.”

~ Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2

Sri Ramana Maharshi

How Can We Become Immortal?

Q. How can we become immortal?

A. To become immortal,

BE more than a mortal.

Consider:

What lives? What dies?

What exists? What persists?

Observe:

That every thing and every phenomenon
that arises and appears on the screen of our consciousness

Is but a fleeting mirage projected in space/time,
by and within the Infinite Light of Eternal Awareness;

That nothing is permanent in the ever changing universe,
where all that appears, disappears.

Be aware:

That only Eternal Awareness
exists and persists beyond time.

So, to be immortal,
just don’t be a mortal –

BE Eternal Awareness –

NOW!

Ron’s explanation and dedication of “How Can We Become Immortal?”

Dear Friends,

Today’s post title asks a trick rhetorical question:

“How Can We Become Immortal?”

In Truth we already are immortal – we are ONE eternal spirit. But (except for rare Buddha-like beings), we have forgotten our immortality and suffer societally from universally mistaken identity.

From childhood we were taught to self-identify only with an illusory and disempowering ego-mind image: with a separate name, gender, and story about who and what we are. We were taught that we were each born into Nature as limited beings; but, not that Nature is our nature, or that we are Beings of Light sharing limitless immortal common consciousness with all life-forms.

Sages, seers and mystics have been trying to tell us for millennia that we’re not what we were taught or think we are.  That our self-identification as merely mortal physical beings seemingly condemned to inevitable death in space/time is an ego-mind illusion – like a mirage; that we suffer from perception-deception; and, that our True Self-identity and Reality is not what it appears to be.

“We are not merely mortal drops
in an ocean of ephemeral forms,
but the eternally Infinite Ocean of Universal Awareness,
appearing as drops!”

So today’s writings are dedicated to helping us remember that we are not merely our mortal bodies – their names, genders, features, colors, religions, beliefs, emotions, habits or stories – or the ‘voices in our heads’.  That we are non-dual immortal spirit experiencing fleeting earth lives from infinite perspectives in transitory physical vehicles.  But that we’re all the same ‘under the hood’! And that we can transcend inevitable suffering of ordinary human existence through Self-realization of our common spiritual essence.

After insanely and unsustainably pillaging and plundering our precious planet, humans are now confronting possibly imminent end of earth life as we have known it. Such potentially omnicidal ecological catastrophe can be averted only from elevated human consciousness beyond that which created this dire insanity. So today’s writings are especially important in these critically crazy times.

We must at long last awaken from our delusion of separateness and powerlessness, and transcend the ignorance of our immortality which has spawned these crises.

Whatever our ethical, religious, or spiritual path, if any, let us together deeply reflect upon today’s quotes and verses about our true immortality.  May they spur our inevitable awakening as the “kingdom of heaven within” – as eternal LOVE.

Thus awakened, may we harmoniously, cooperatively and compassionately resolve our common crises for the common good.

And so shall it be!

“Life is a round trip metaphoric journey,
on which we are destined to return to point of origin.
On return, we learn – we never left.”
~ Ron Rattner, Sutra Sayings

Divine Time Release Capsules

Our destiny is Divinity.

Our human body/minds are like

Divine time release capsules

Of ‘congealed’ consciousness
 encapsulated by karma –

Enveloped by eons of illusory thoughts, words, and deeds

of imagined separation from others, from Nature
and from our ever immanent inner Essence.

But our optical illusion of separation is being released in time,
As our imagined karmic coatings are inevitably dissolving into
The eternal inner Ocean of Universal Awareness.

So, with ever increasing awareness,
In time we are slowly melting
into the mystery of our inner Divinity,
and merging with our eternal Self.

Thus, beyond time –
Beyond ego’s optical illusion of separation –
Our common destiny is Divinity.

And so shall it Be!

Ron’s Explanation of “Divine Time Release Capsules”

Dear Friends,

Metaphorically we are fellow spiritual space travelers – like astronauts on a little spaceship called Earth.”

As seemingly mortal humans we are journeying on a planetary “pale blue dot” through a vast and mysterious space/time universe beyond scientific comprehension. Thus our ultimate destiny as space/time travelers is unknown.

So often we’re fearful, anxious, or stressed about our uncertain future. To help assuage inevitable anxieties, I have posted the foregoing “Divine Time Release Capsule” verses which metaphorically reveal why we never need to fear or worry. They explain that:

Until now, we have mistakenly perceived, believed and behaved as if we are somatically separated from each other and Nature, and from our sole spiritual essence – which is Infinite Awareness. Consequently, to learn our true Reality and deepest non-dual Self identity, our eternal souls have become unconsciously encapsulated in “self-woven karmic cocoons”, in which we are exploring the Cosmos in mortal human bodies on ‘spaceship Earth’.

Our human bodies are like “space/time soul suits” (comparable to astronauts’ space suits or deep sea divers’ suits). As we so explore this seemingly vast space/time universe (while encapsulated in karmic cocoons), we gradually learn that the Cosmos is but an ever impermanent mental illusion (like an ephemeral mirage).

And as we thus realize that time and space are illusory, our karmic cocoons are gradually but inevitably dissolving and melting (like time release capsules), and merging into an Eternal ocean of Infinite Awareness, which is our ultimate destination. Like beautiful butterflies we are evolving as living metaphors for metamorphosis to emerge totally transformed from self woven cocoons, and fated for ascension to a wonderful new Reality.(https://sillysutras.com/butterflies/)

Thus, we are assured to safely survive our mysterious metaphoric journey, because “Our destiny is Divinity” – eternal Reality, beyond this illusory phenomenal world of ever passing appearances.

May these metaphoric time release assurances bring us ever less stress and ever more happiness as we inevitably fulfill our destiny of divine discovery on “spaceship Earth”.

And so it shall be!

Ron’s explanation and dedication of “Healing is Wholing”

Dear Friends,

We live in an age of mental malaise – in an extremely stressful, disharmonious and crazy world, with widespread psychological and physical sickness and suffering; a world so crazy that we are on (or beyond) the brink of human caused ecological or nuclear cataclysm.

So how can we “heal” this crazy world to avert human caused catastrophe?

The foregoing verses and sutras describe “healing” as a universally holistic process. All humans and other earth-world life-forms are deeply connected. So to heal our planet’s pervasive pathologies and disharmonies, our ills must be viewed and addressed holistically and systemically, not separately or symptomatically. Identifying and treating separate symptoms may afford temporary relief, but it cannot cure their systemic causes.

To permanently cure our disharmonies and sufferings, individuals and societies must be healed holistically.

Cosmically all human insanities, disharmonies and worldly sufferings originate from conditioned “ego-minds”. They can only be “healed” mentally by ending ego-minds. “Ego” is our mistaken mental self identification as perceived physical entities separate from Nature, and from eternally Infinite Awareness, our sole spiritual essence.

Healing as revealing spiritual wholeness

During a ten year post-retirement reclusive period, I often reflected about healing this crazy world transcendentally by evolving from illusory “ego” separation and suffering to joyous Self realization as Infinite Awareness.

Today’s “Healing is Wholing” posting. which was composed during that reclusive period, epigrammatically expresses the essence of my ideas about spiritual healing through evolutionary realization of SELF. The poem was inspired by the following synchronistic circumstances:

After I retired from all other professional and pro-bono legal activities, I continued serving on the Board of Directors of New Dimensions Foundation, an independent producer of spiritual radio interviews. While we were both serving on the New Dimensions Board, I became friendly with Dr. Anne Wilson-Schaef, a renowned best selling spiritual author, and well known PhD psychologist, whose books are described at http://livinginprocess.com/books/.

After many years as a practicing psychotherapist, Dr. Schaef decided that conventional psychotherapy didn’t work. So she originated and began leading worldwide ‘workshops’ based on 12 step therapy principles which she called “living in process intensives”. She described her “living in process” ideas in her controversially popular book: “Beyond Therapy, Beyond Science: A New Model For Healing The Whole Person”.

In this book Dr. Schaef described society as addictively and psychologically alienated from the whole universe and its spirituality. And she asserted that traditionally dualistic Newtonian sciences and psychotherapies co-dependently enabled an “Addictive Society”, just as individual enablers co-dependently fostered addictions (like alcoholism). So to heal and spiritually transform our alienated society she proposed going beyond conventional dualistic psychotherapies to a natural evolutionary process of experiential transformation, which she called “living in process”.

At Dr. Schaef’s request for comments, I carefully read a galley proof of her “Beyond Therapy” book before its publication in a new edition. In reading that text I recognized that many of her then controversial conclusions and proposals, were completely consistent with my views about materialistic science and secular psychology as impeding our experiential earth-life evolution. For example, Dr. Schaef’s proposals were harmonious with my view that secular psychology merely attempts to alleviate ego’s inevitable mental suffering, whereas spiritual psychotherapy aims at ending our psychological imprisonment. (See https://sillysutras.com/spiritual-psychotherapy/)

Dr. Schaef’s text often used both the concepts of “recovery” (as from addictive habit patterns) as well as “healing” ( as in the subtitle “A New Model For Healing The Whole Person”}. Though I understood Dr. Schaef’s proposals, I became concerned that other readers might mistakenly conflate the “recovering” and “healing” concepts; that “recovering” implied returning from addiction to a prior condition of adjustment to a sick society, whereas “healing” meant being uplifted beyond habitual dependencies to a higher and freer state of being.

So, to tactfully communicate this concern to Dr. Schaef, I ‘channeled’ and sent her the above verses about about life as an evolutionary process revealing a new state of spiritual wholeness, beyond recovering a prior adjustment to a sick society.

Conclusion

May today’s verses and sutras help inspire our transformational transcendence of ego-mind’s evolutionary impediments, and so hasten our human “healing” process to psychological health and freedom – our universal evolution from “nescience, to gnosis, to apotheosis”

May we thus, while “living in process”:

“Heal systems – not symptoms,
with tonics – not toxics;

with Love and Light –
not stress and fright.”

And so may it be!

Is the world being ruled and ruined by psychopaths?

Introduction

Dear Friends,

Have you ever wondered why there is so much suffering in our world; why we are facing extraordinary ecological, financial, international and interpersonal crises so serious that they cause misery for millions and threaten all life on our precious planet?

Is is possible that these crises have been precipitated by sociopathic world “leaders” – obscenely privileged corporate, political and religious oligarchs – who without apparent remorse amorally acquire and misuse power, and excessive material wealth far beyond their conceivable needs; people so insane that they are unjustly and brutally harming countless people and creatures, and myopically scuttling Spaceship Earth, destroying the life support systems which sustain us?

As more and more studies emerge demonstrating the corrosive effect of psychopathy on governments and corporations, researchers have begun to explore how our society seems to have been afflictively molded in the psychopaths’ image.

One of these psychopathy researchers, Canadian author Stefan Verstappen, believes that we live in societies shaped and ruled by psychopaths – people in positions of great corporate and political power who without conscience, empathy or remorse, act to promote their delusionally perceived self interests, amorally and often violently.

Verstappen says that psychopaths often attain positions of power because, unlike the vast majority of people, they don’t play by the rules and have no qualms about cheating, lying or doing anything to anyone that gets them what they want.

Here are two recommended You Tube videos of Verstappen explaining his theories about psychopaths.

Ron’s comments:

From a limited earthly perspective, it appears that psychopaths do indeed rule the world (as Verstappen contends). As an octogenarian I have long wondered about psychopaths in power, especially because the twentieth century was blighted by over 300 million democides – government instigated or perpetrated killings of mostly non-combatant civilians – far more than in any previous century.

In my student days I learned of maniacs like Hitler in Nazi Germany, Mao in Communist China, Stalin in the U.S.S.R., Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and numerous others who were then bestially causing untold murders and misery.

Naively, I then believed that my country the USA, and its Western allies, represented only virtues of good and democratic decency, and that after the demise of World War II era psychopaths, the world would be restored to an age of peace and prosperity. But I was wrong.

Officially instigated and perpetrated amoral wars and killings – many directly or indirectly attributable to the US empire and its allies – have continued. Complicit with official governmental sanctions and support, international corporate oligarchs are insanely developing and selling weapons of mass destruction more than capable of destroying all life on earth, and insidiously and unsustainably pillaging and poisoning our precious planet’s ecology. Such insanity is impoverishing the vast majority of humankind, and pervasively harming human health, with countless chemically, genetically and radiologically polluting products – even including foods, drinks and pharmaceuticals.

After the traumatically shocking 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the soon ensuing deranged Viet Nam war devastation, I became aware of the prescience of President Dwight Eisenhower’s 1961 valedictory caution against dominance of the “military-industrial complex” with “potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power”.

Despite Eisenhower’s warning, it seems now apparent that ruling power has indeed been misappropriated by the military-industrial complex which, in complicity with billionaire financial, political and corporate sociopaths, is ruling and ruining the world.

As Hitler in Nazi Germany molded an insane society to support his pathological pretensions and plans, since 9/11/2001 sociopathic Western leaders have contrived and fomented alleged “terrorist” enemies as a fraudulent pretense to create an insane society which has fearfully condoned or acquiesced in outrageously immoral wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and deranged plans for attacking Iran and other Moslem countries, with radically expanded US military budgets and executive powers, and obscenely enriched entrenched vested interests, all accompanied by serious curtailments of US constitutional protections and civil liberties.

But how can humanity solve this planetary life and death problem of societal insanity and irrational fear fomented by psychopathic authorities? For many years I have been inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet, one of the world’s wisest incarnate sages, for guidance on how we can evolve beyond the critical problems stemming from governance by sociopaths and psychopaths.

Addressing our ecological crisis His Holiness has said:

“Ultimately, the decision to save the environment must come from the human heart. The key point is a call for a genuine sense of universal responsibility that is based on love, compassion and clear awareness.”

Rather than vainly appealing for heartfelt compassion from psychopaths lacking empathy, I optimistically propose that we can solve and transcend current crises by intuitively following our hearts to achieve a spiritual tipping point – a ‘critical mass that will solve our critical mess’. Moreover, we can study and emulate pre-industrial societies that have instinctively lived for millennia in sustainable harmony with Nature.

At present, most psychologists and psychiatrists are devoting research efforts and treatments to individual mental pathologies. Perhaps we need first to address societal pathologies attributable to stress caused by psychopathic and sociopathic authorities complicit with the military-industrial complex. How can people avoid individual psychological problems while they are insanely and unnecessarily subjected to constant societal stresses concerning their health, life necessities and human rights?

Recently inaugurated at the Dalai Lama’s suggestion is a “Center For Investigating Healthy Minds”, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, my undergraduate alma mater. Similarly, wouldn’t it be helpful to establish scientific centers for the study of sane societies?

Weren’t there indigenous societies whose peoples lived sane and happy lives by prioritizing sustainable harmony with Nature over it’s unsustainable exploitation, cooperation over competition, respect for prophets over lust for profits, democracy over authoritarianism? Isn’t it crucial that we learn from their experience?

Conclusion

President Eisenhower in 1961 deemed essential “an alert and knowledgeable citizenry” to prevent “the disastrous rise of misplaced power”. These comments are respectfully offered in furtherance of that goal. May they help inspire “a genuine sense of universal responsibility that is based on love, compassion and clear awareness” which will promote our heartfelt, sane and nonviolent transcendence of current planetary insanity.

Epilogue, Veterans Day 2018:

November 11, 2018 marks the centenary anniversary of the end of the first World War – “the war to end all wars”. To commemorate this memorable event, ‘leaders’ from 70 nations, including the US empire and its allies, gathered in Paris, France, at the Arc de Triomphe, purportedly to honor the millions who died in that insane conflict. Their ceremony happened precisely 100 years after the 1918 armistice agreement, at the spiritually auspicious 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

But paradoxically many of those ‘leaders’ represented nations which for the past century have continued to perpetrate many more “crimes against peace”, including wars of aggression, the supreme international crime violating international treaties, agreements or assurances recognized and followed by the post WWII Nuremberg Tribunal.

November 11, first became a US federal holiday as “Armistice Day”. But, with no “end to all wars” yet in sight, the US federal holiday morphed from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day”.

Since Donald J.Trump’s 2016 ‘red pill’ campaign and election as 45th US President the world has experienced exceptionally tumultuous times. Many US and world citizens are experiencing and demonstrating considerable fear, anger, hatred and other polarizing negative emotions, rather than “a genuine sense of universal responsibility that is based on love, compassion and clear awareness”.

Whatever our political, cultural, generational, or geographical perspectives, we share overriding common needs and aspirations. As humankind we share the same common Cosmic consciousness, the same web of life, the same precious Earth biosphere, the same aspirations for health and happiness and for just democratic societies serving basic needs of all life on a peaceful planet. Yet until now virtually all of us in varying degrees have been suffering from an illusory sense of separation from each other, from Nature, and from our ONE common spiritual essence.

Although armed conflict is behaviorally as old as humankind, for the first time in our recorded history we are being forced to realize that more wars can trigger a nuclear or ecological catastrophe insanely ending earth life as we have known it. Yet we have gained the previously unprecedented technical capacity to end all human starvation and poverty. And in these ‘red pill’ critical times of immense suffering, yet immense opportunity, we are awakening to our infinitely unlimited human potentiality.

So as we honor and remember all those who have been conscripted or enlisted into military services fighting endless wars, let us urgently and lovingly envisage and intend imminent inception – at long last – of an era with no more war on our precious planet.

Together let us join in imagining our precious planet cooperatively ruled bottom-up by humble and compassionate societies, rather than top-down by oligarchic or plutocratic billionaire sociopaths or psychopaths.

And as we envision lasting peace, let us be guided by the Dalai Lama’s wisdom that

“Our lives are conditioned by karma. They are characterized by endless cycles of problems. One problem appears and passes, and soon another one begins.”

“Try to consider as transitory all adverse circumstances and disturbances. Like ripples in a pool, they occur and soon disappear.”

“The essence of all spiritual life is your attitude towards others. Once you have pure and sincere motives all the rest follows.”
~ Dalai Lama – Little Book of Buddhism
